Description

The artist has depicted his mother’s dreaming at a site called Wurlkkubimerre. This site forms the focus of the identity for a number of clans, who each have common icons. In this sense the painting also represents a deed to tribal lands. Bulunbulun is the ‘protector’ or ‘guardian’ for his mother’s dreaming and is therefore entitled to depict aspects of the sacred story. The long shape in the centre represents a hollow tree trunk, containing the galanjanjh ‘bees’ wax honey comb, shown as the circle at the bottom. The dots are yarrpanj ‘bees’ flying in and out of their hives. The animals in the painting are warna ‘honey’ seekers: narrgenarrge ‘northern brush tailed possum’ and warpurr ‘sugar glider’.
