Description
Magic played a catalytic part in the survival of the Torres Strait Islanders culture and society. The Maidalaig (magic and medicine men) performed his magic for many purposes. In this instance, this lino print depicts the Maidalaig using his magic to bring fortuity to hunters and their canoes during their daily hunting trip. A Maidalaig would perform his magic at the top of certain Aguli (a term used by Kaurareg people for a look out) from which his magical powers would lure and direct the dugongs into the nearby feeding grounds.
