Description
This is a replica of a spinning top that was a competitive sport practiced throughout the Torres Strait Islands.
A.C. Haddon, the British anthropologist and ethnologist observed in his journals ‘Haddon’s 1898 The Recordings of the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to Torres Straits that at one match the tops spun for 27 minutes.
Songs were sung and the competitions lasted many days.
