Description
Dugongs or Dhangalal (more than one) live in the pristine waters surrounding the artist’s island of Badu in the Torres Strait.
These mammals are respected and sacred to the people of the region. Dangal is one of the main totems of Badu.
The artist is a master carver and highly regarded for his skill and intimate knowledge of the sea creatures he replicates. This work has been carved from wood from the Wongai tree that takes around 100 years to mature. The wood is extremely hard and takes great skill to carve.
