Description

Aun is Kala Lagaw Ya (Western Torres Strait dialect) for a Blue-Spotted Stingray and lives in coastal and estuarine waters around the islands, often observed buried in sand or mud with only the eyes exposed. This species has a long, pale-tipped tail, the last third of which is crossed by dark bands. It grows to a disc size of 40 cm, and a total length of 70 cm. It also has a very venomous pin sticking out of its tail, and can be very painful if you stand on top of it. However, if you drag your foot on the seabed, it will send a vibrating sound through the water, chasing the Aun away.
