Description
Master printmaker Theo Tremblay ran a three week workshop for students at the Millingimbi School in Central Arnhem Land in September 1998. During the sixties Millingimbi was one of the most active Aboriginal traditional painting communities in Australia. Andrew Margalulu, the Raminginging artist, dancer and songman was selected to act as the traditional tutor to the aspiring printmakers. Whilst casting a critical eye over their work, teaching and passing on his carving skills Andrew completed The Turtle Hunter whilst surrounded by his eager apprentices. The image depicts the hunting activity common in his homeland of Ramingining, near the Arafura Swamp.
