Yadai Kulal (Directional Rocks)

Description

Rock formations similar to the one depicted in the print can be seen on the main point on the artist’s island of Badu.

These were used as a means of conveying a message, mainly of a directional nature, to Badu Islanders. The way in which the rocks were arranged would relate to the stars and constellations thereby informing people of where those who last positioned the rocks were headed.

These signal rocks were about the size of a ten pin bowling ball. Each formation would include a larger elongated ‘directional’ rock.
