Description

Mawuka is a yam (underground tuber) that may be eaten after roasting. It is only found at Dhambaliya. This image depicts the Mawuka ceremony, while the background pattern represents Rirratjinu land at Dhambaliya and Yirrkala. Other meaning may also be interpreted from this image. For example, the tuber may represent a woman of the Rirratjinu clan and the flowers are her children. Alternatively the tuber may be interpreted to relate to the Dhuwa moiety and the flowers represent the nine Dhuwa clans currently residing in the Yirrkala area.
