George Milpurrurru, famous lawman, statesman and artist of the Ganalbingu people in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory died in November 1998. He worked on this lithograph at his home in 1992 with master printmaker Theo Tremblay. At the end of the monsoon season when the magpie geese lay their eggs the Ganalbingu people would go out into the Arafura Swamp instringy bark canoes and collect the eggs from the hundreds of nests – which were sometimes thought of as the resting place for souls. Printmaker Theo Tremblay wasn’t in a position to consider printing from the stone until last year and unfortunately George was sick and died before printing commenced. Negotiations between Bulabula Arts and Milpurrurru’s family has allowed this print to be published. His daughters Jenny Birrkin and Gladys Womati have signed each print in memory of this great indigenous Australian.
