Ara Gub is is the word for harpoon in the Western Torres Strait language Kala Lagaw Ya.  The harpoon is also called whap.  The whap has its own cultural protocols that have been passed down through generations.

In Torres Strait customs and beliefs the whap is treated like a human being and cared for appropriately when it is being used for hunting dugong and turtle.
