Description

Turtles crawl up on beaches to lay eggs on many of the Torres Strait Islands.  This coincides with certain phases of the moon.  Men who know the turtle’s habitat venture out to gather the eggs.
Our people eat seasonally around the phases of the moon in order to sustain the region’s food sources of which turtle eggs are one that can be found throughout most months of the year.
This image expresses what the egg gatherer would see when approaching a beach in pursuit of this food source.
The turtles that lay eggs throughout the year are the Hawks Beak Turtle and Flat Back Turtle.  The Green Turtle lays during the change of the monsoon season.
