Daniel Beeron

Daniel Beeron Galaman is a Girramay Traditional Owner who lives at Murray Upper, north of Cardwell in North Queensland.

Daniel began weaving mostly out of curiosity and now extends that interest into his other arts practice. Drawing on his cultural heritage, he considers the practice of weaving is more than making something that is both practical and beautiful, it is about consolidating cultural practices and ensuring they survive through to the next generation. His arts practice draws from an exploration of weaving patterning and other traditional design.
Daniel’s work is held in a number of collections and was most recently acquired for the Artbank Collection, Sydney. His ceramic work is also part of an artwork installation called Bagu with Jiman, which was shortlisted as a finalist in the 27th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2010.
The Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, based in Cardwell, represents artists from nine Traditional Owner Groups, the Nywaigi, Gugu Badhun, Warrgamay, Warungnu, Bandjin, Girramay, Gulgnay, Jirrbal and Djiru people.

The traditional country of these groups covers some 25,000 square kilometres, from north of Townsville, south-west to Clarke River, north to the Mission Beach area, west to Ravenshoe and east to include Hinchinbrook and the Family Group Islands.
Djumbunji Press, through collaborative printer Bobbie Ruben, delivered workshops in screen printing at the Girringun Art Centre as a means of providing practical support to the artists after many suffered devastating losses as a result of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi. The resultant exhibition, Gijalordi, explores the local Kingfisher story.
